TITLE:              Hispanic Advocate

REPORTS TO: Associate Director

SUPERVISES:   Volunteers and Student/Interns

 

JOB SUMMARY:  Provide advocacy and case management for clients, empowering client to learn self-advocacy over time.  Responsible for responding to specific needs of victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault victims and providing community education and outreach to the Hispanic community in Sheboygan County. 

Must be able to represent the mission, values and philosophy of Safe Harbor to program participants, employees, and the general public. Model and promote attitudes of non-violence, anti-oppression, inclusiveness, and power-sharing in all facets of position responsibilities, especially when working with community partners.  Be an outspoken voice against violence against women and children, teen dating violence, sexual assault, rigid gender roles, and norms of masculinity within the community through conversation, trainings, social media, and one-on-one conversations. 

PRIMARY DUTIES:

Direct Service:

  • Adhere to agency policies and work rules including client confidentiality and child abuse reporting.   Maintain professional boundaries with all clients
  • Assist with development and implementation of a robust Hispanic advocacy program for Safe Harbor, including outcome evaluation 
  • Coordinate advocacy and support for residents, serving as the primary advocate for Spanish speaking resident and non-resident clients.  This includes crisis intervention, advocacy, life skills training, parenting support, information and referrals, safety planning and goal setting for victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault
  • Assists victims with systems advocacy; securing needed resources by providing information, referral, advocacy, translating; interpreting and accompaniment when needed
  • Assist with legal advocacy including, but not limited to restraining orders, custody, divorce, and immigration.
  • As needed, provide support to 24-hour hotline as specified by the staff rotation schedule and respond, when needed, to the shelter, hospitals, court or advocacy center anytime during those shifts
  • Respond to service requests of Hispanic victims/survivors on an on-call basis
  • Facilitate Spanish speaking weekly women’s support group
  • Provide support, positive role modeling; structure, and assist to manage and resolve group dynamics of resident, children and families in shelter

 

Client/Community Relations:

  • Provides trainings, educational workshops and other awareness raising events to different groups throughout Sheboygan County on domestic violence, sexual assault and the Hispanic Community.  
  • Identifies, develops and maintains relationships with appropriate service agencies in the community, which will enhance overall service delivery to families and children we serve.  Including but not limited to; school and active youth based community programs, social services, health care, courts and other community based programming
  • Assist with training staff and volunteers about cultural beliefs and practices of the Hispanic
  • Acts as a liaison between Safe Harbor and the Hispanic community as well as between Safe harbor and community agencies and systems that serve victims from the Hispanic population.
  • Develop an outreach plan which includes targeted areas and recommendations on reaching the Hispanic populations throughout Sheboygan County.

Staff Relations:

  • Collaborate with other advocacy staff members to provide support and develop opportunities to better serve the Hispanic population
  • Works closely with other staff to develop and deliver community education and outreach activities
  • Assists with training staff and volunteers about families affected by domestic violence/sexual assault
  • Responds to staff’s request for information on cultural issues and available services
  • Facilitates communication between staff and clientele

 

Administration

  • Attend all staff meetings and board meetings as requested
  • Assist with development, implementation and maintenance of data for measuring service delivery outcomes, program effectiveness and follow-up for program population
  • Responsible for maintaining accurate client and other agency records; compile monthly and quarterly resident data, and monthly program reports 
  • Responsible for ensuring that reports and data that enhance the agency’s fund-raising efforts, community education and proposal writing are submitted in a timely and thorough manner
  • Maintain shelter office space, stock office supplies; develop and maintain inventory of necessary supplies for appointments, support groups and families in shelter  

Other

  • Attend community and state forums as necessary
  • Support agency events through attendance as appropriate
  • Identify, train and utilize volunteers to maximize agencies efforts in the community
  • Provide support and advocacy to Safe Harbor participants including resource, support, and information referrals, education, and advocacy, especially concerning youth services when needed and available
  • Attend weekly staff and case review meetings and other agency meetings, as requested
  • Represent the agency at community meetings/functions through participation in collaborative meetings and community outreach presentations
  • Other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Ability to communicate in both English and Spanish fluently
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills in both English and Spanish
  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology or related field and/or equivalent relevant experience; Master’s degree preferred.  
  • Experience working with sexual or domestic violence issues, working with youth, and providing victim and systems advocacy preferred
  • Excellent judgment, an ability to exercise discretion and tact in difficult or confidential situations and an ability to project a positive, professional image to the public.
  • Computer proficient including an intermediate/advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
  • Must have reliable transportation and maintain valid driver’s license and insurance coverage for vehicle
  • Experience in working with people from diverse cultural, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds and lifestyles.
  • Must demonstrate a commitment to social justice issues, such as immigrants’ rights and the prevention of domestic violence/sexual assault
  • High degree of flexibility and the ability to problem solve and make decisions individually and /or within a team, in order to achieve organizational objectives.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills; ability to articulately communicate and interact comfortably and effectively with staff, funders, board, community partners and governmental agencies.
